Upright Walker Benefits Posture, Wrist Support and Walking With Leg Weakness

Does using a regular walker leave you leaning forward or putting too much pressure on your hands? An upright walker with forearm supports may be worth considering.

In this video, I demonstrate how the walker supports the forearms near the elbows while the person walks. It offers a different way to position and support the body than a walker that relies mainly on hand grips.

How can an upright walker help posture?

The raised forearm rests can encourage a more upright walking position. That may make it easier for some people to look ahead instead of down toward the walker. In a small study comparing walkers, participants walked with a more upright posture when using a forearm-support walker. Read the study.

Proper height and positioning matter: a walker set too high or too low may be uncomfortable or difficult to control.

Can it reduce pressure on the wrists and hands?

With the forearms resting on padded supports, some body weight can be shared through the arms instead of relying as heavily on the palms and wrists. This may be helpful for someone who finds gripping or pressing down on a standard walker uncomfortable. It does not remove all hand pressure—the user still needs to hold and control the handles. Research on forearm-support walkers.

What about lower-body weakness?

For some people with leg weakness, the forearm supports can provide additional support while walking and shift a portion of body weight away from the legs. The amount of support needed varies, so an upright walker is not automatically the safest choice for everyone with significant weakness or balance difficulties. Research on walking with forearm support.

Why try a walker in your own home?

At FisioMed Mobile Clinic, we bring physiotherapy to you. An in-home mobility assessment lets us look at how you walk through your actual doorways, hallways and living spaces. We can assess whether an upright walker suits your needs, adjust its height and practise using it safely as part of a broader strengthening and mobility plan.

FisioMed offers in-home physiotherapy in Surrey, Langley, White Rock, Delta, Ladner and surrounding Lower Mainland communities. Contact us to ask about an in-home walking and mobility assessment.
