When Should My Rehabilitation Begin?

The sooner you begin your rehabilitation the better. Our occupational therapists can coordinate your hospital discharge home and then physiotherapist will assess your abilities and formulate a treatment plan to get you back to baseline.

Who Is Eligible To Receive In-Home Rehabilitation Services?

If you were involved in a car accident (at fault or not) you are eligible to receive in home rehabilitation services if you are unable to make into a clinic due to your injuries.

In-home physiotherapy can be highly beneficial after a car accident by providing specialized care and support within the comfort of your own home.

Personalized Treatment Plan: An in-home physiotherapist will assess your condition and create a customized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. They will consider your injuries, pain levels, mobility limitations, and overall health to develop a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

Pain Management: Car accidents often result in pain due to musculoskeletal injuries or whiplash. The physiotherapist can employ various techniques such as manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, and modalities like heat or cold therapy to manage pain, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.

Restoring Mobility and Function: Injuries from car accidents can limit your mobility and functionality. The physiotherapist will work with you to regain strength, flexibility, and range of motion. They may incorporate exercises, stretching, joint mobilization, and balance training to improve your physical abilities.

Gait Training: If you have difficulty walking or have experienced a significant impact on your gait pattern, the physiotherapist can help you regain proper walking mechanics and coordination. They may use exercises, assistive devices, or walking aids as needed.

Bed mobility: Physiotherapists can work with patients to regain the ability to move independently in bed, including rolling, sitting up, and transitioning from lying down to sitting or standing positions.

Transfers: Physiotherapy can focus on teaching patients safe and efficient techniques for transferring from one surface to another, such as from the bed to a wheelchair or from a wheelchair to a standing position.

Strengthening exercises: Physiotherapists can design and guide patients through exercises that target specific muscle groups, aiming to rebuild strength and improve overall functional abilities.

Balance and Proprioception Training: After a car accident, individuals may experience balance deficits. Physiotherapists can implement exercises and activities to improve balance and proprioception (awareness of body position and movement).

A kinesiologist can play a valuable role in providing in-home rehabilitation services following a severe car accident.

Assessment and Rehabilitation Plan: A kinesiologist will assess your physical abilities, including strength, flexibility, range of motion, posture, and functional limitations resulting from the accident. They will develop a personalized rehabilitation plan tailored to your specific needs and goals.
Exercise Prescription: Kinesiologists are experts in prescribing exercises to improve movement, functionality, and overall physical condition. They will design a program that focuses on strengthening weak muscles, improving flexibility, and enhancing your overall physical fitness.
Pain Management: Car accidents often lead to acute or chronic pain. A kinesiologist can incorporate pain management strategies into your rehabilitation plan, including exercises, stretches, and techniques to alleviate pain, such as heat or cold therapy.
Restoring Range of Motion and Function: Injuries from car accidents can restrict your range of motion and impact your ability to perform daily activities. A kinesiologist will use various techniques and exercises to help restore your range of motion, improve joint mobility, and regain functional abilities.
Injury-Specific Rehabilitation: If you have sustained specific injuries in the car accident, such as fractures, sprains, or soft tissue injuries, a kinesiologist will provide targeted rehabilitation exercises and techniques to facilitate healing and restore function in the affected area.
Balance and Coordination Training: Car accidents can affect your balance and coordination, making simple tasks challenging. A kinesiologist can design exercises and activities to enhance your balance, coordination, and proprioception, reducing the risk of falls and improving overall stability.
Return-to-Work Planning: If you’ve been unable to work due to your injuries, a kinesiologist can assist with developing a plan to safely transition you back to work. They will consider your physical capabilities and work requirements to create a gradual return-to-work program.
Restoring Mobility and Function: Injuries from car accidents can limit your mobility and functionality. The physiotherapist will work with you to regain strength, flexibility, and range of motion. They may incorporate exercises, stretching, joint mobilization, and balance training to improve your physical abilities.
Education and Lifestyle Modification: Kinesiologists can educate you on injury prevention strategies, proper body mechanics, and ergonomics to minimize the risk of re-injury. They may also provide guidance on lifestyle modifications, such as activity pacing and self-care practices, to support your recovery.

Common Motor Vehicle Accident Injuries

Head and back injuries from a car accident are typically the most serious. Head injuries can lead to vision problems, skull fractures and concussions. With a concussion, you may experience dizziness and headaches. Another common car accident injury is a herniated disk. Neck and chest injuries are also common, with whiplash being the most common accident injury.

Whiplash can be very painful and restrict movement. The sudden movement of the neck and head in a car accident can cause whiplash. Blunt force trauma from a car accident can collapse lungs and break ribs.
